I should probably write something

Well, I'm procrastinating so obviously I'm gonna update Xanga for the first time since August.

I'm student teaching. And it's taking up all my time. I feel like I'm completely behind in everything I'm doing and I feel like there's no possible way I can get it all done.

I hate using other teacher's lesson plans and working within their systems. Some stuff I like and I will probably use in my own classroom but other stuff I just can't stand. I'm supposed to be able to do stuff my own way, but one of my co-ops seems like she doesn't like what I do unless it's her way. The most fun I had teaching was when I was left alone to teach the 7th graders because then I didn't feel like I was being judged every second.

On the other hand, I like my other Co-op teacher. I was introducing new vocab to her class and she was working on her computer behind me. When I was done and she set the kids to work on their homework, she gestured for me to follow her out of the room. Of course, I'm thinking that she's going to tear me apart and tell me what I need to do better. Instead she tells me that I did a fantastic job. That definitely made me feel better. This is reconfirming that I want to teach high school instead of middle school.

So, what I really need is a day where I can get everything done and catch up. Ideally, I would like to be able to plan my lessons 2 weeks in advance in as much detail as possible, but right now I'm still working with the other teacher's plan and she hasn't really been able to plan more than a day in advance. So I'm not happy.

I want it to be June and then September so that I can get a real teaching job with my own classroom and do things my way.

So, I set up a blog just for my adventures in Spain.

That's probably where all the fun stuff will be when I'm there. (You'll still find me on facebook and e-mail too though)

That's What You're Paid For

"I don't know if you care or not, but when I was in the dressing room tonight the girl that was cleaning it out basically yelled at me to hang my clothes up, isn't that what you're paid for?"-- Clueless Kohl's Customer.

No, I'm not paid to clean up after you. I am not paid to clean up the mess of tangled clothes and hangers that you leave crumped and wrinkled in the corner of our fitting room floors. No where in my job description does is say that I pick up after you. But because you're too lazy, I have to do it anyway because I have pride in the way my store looks even if you don't. And don't you dare walk out of the fitting rooms complaining about how messy it is when you walked in with a pile of twenty shirts and walk out with none. You're the reason it looks that way.

There are hooks in the fitting rooms. Clothing you don't want can be hung there and the fitting rooms immediately look better. or better yet, you know that rack of clothing right in front of the fitting room entrance? Yeah, that one that you have to actively try to avoid walking into? The one with the sigh that says "fitting room merchandice?" That's an even better place to put the items that you don't want.

What am I paid for? I am paid to help you find the clothing you're looking for, call around to other stores if our store doesn't have the right color or size, make sure the racks are straight and organized, and to check the fitting rooms. I am not paid to be you personal slave or your personal shopper (the quickest way to get the worse service from me is to tell me that you "don't wanna work for this" when I'm going out of my way to help you find the perfect sweatshirt when you really can't even tell me what you want). You don't leave clean clothes in a pile at home, what makes you think you can do that in a public place?

Mostly I am paid to keep my mouth shut when all I want to do is tell you what a fucking idiot you are.

I have never once been upset when a customer tells me they'll go to Apple Valley (or insert other store here) from now on. They can have you and I never have to deal with you again. I win.

(heaven help those bitchy customers once I quit Kohl's and I'm standing in line behind them)

For those of you that that know, my Grandmother passed away on May 31st. She was 84 years old and very well loved. I was lucky enough to get to see her one last time before she died and I will forever be grateful for the closure I got from that.

And today was her funeral. As sad as today was (and you can be sure I was bawling through the majority of it. Everytime I thought I was going to be okay, something would set me off again), it was also a day of celebration. We got to celebrate everything we loved about my grandmother, and there were many times that I was laughing as hard as I was crying. I was also reminded of many many things that I had forgotten over the years.

We also found our own special way to honor my grandmother. She was very well known for her watermelon picked and canned jams and jellies, winning dozens (no, I'm not exaggerating) of ribbons for them at the state fair dating as far back as 1962. My Aunt Diana gave everyone in the family a prize ribbon to pin to their clothing today. But they took things one step further and color coded them (you can tell we're a family of elementary teachers). My grandmother's children got the blue first place ribbons, the other grandchildren and I got the second place red ribbons, the great-grandchildren got while, and anyone that was crazy enough to marry into out family got pink. I thought that tribute was appropriate. Grandma was well known for her cooking and it was just a little unique and off the wall- Just like her.

I also got to see my grandmother's best friend (unfortunately, I was unable to meet her). They have been best friends for 70 years and I can only hope to have relationships that last that long.

All the food at my Aunt's house this afternoon were my grandmother's favorites. And I never realized how much my family likes their candy. Especially those circus peanuts. (those marshmallw type things.) It was also pointed out to me by my cousin's husband that we were the only ones he knew of that liked them. No one that married into the family does, but anyone genetically related to my grandparents can't help but eat them when they're there- Even if they aren't really a favorite.

So It's Been Awhile

I passed my PRAXIS II test! This means that I'm one step closer to being a real teacher!

Quick update on my life:

I haven't graduated yet. I've still got a year left before I'm that lucky. In the fall I'm off to Spain for the semester and in the spring I'll be student teaching. I won't know where until I get home from Spain. Right now, I'm also talking a summer class designed to help me finish my teaching portfolio as much as I can at this point in my education. So that'll be a big relief not to have to do it while I'm student teaching. I only have one more day of this class though. I'm ready to be done with the 8am classes. I've been driving up to RF on Wednesday nights and staying with my roommate. Consequently, I have yet to move out so I still have that to look forward to.

This summer I'm working at Kohl's (come visit me!) to pay for that trip to Spain and just generally enjoying the hell outa life.
